Vietnam’s Industrial Boom: The Crucial Need for Quality GI Coil & Sheet

Vietnam's dynamic economic trajectory, powered by its rise as a global manufacturing hub and infrastructure pioneer, demands highly durable and standardized steel inputs. From the industrial estates of Bac Ninh, Hai Phong, and Thai Nguyen in the North to the massive commercial zones of Binh Duong and Dong Nai in the South, Galvanized Iron (GI) coils and sheets form the foundation of building structural frameworks, logistics facilities, HVAC ducting, and industrial cladding.

Climatic Challenges: Tropical High-Humidity & Coastal Salinity

Vietnam’s unique geography spans over 3,200 kilometers of coastline. While this provides unparalleled global trade access, it presents extreme ambient corrosion risks for industrial engineering. The combination of high relative humidity (frequently exceeding 80%) and high airborne chloride concentrations in coastal economic zones calls for a zinc protection layer that goes beyond normal standards.

Our hot-dip galvanized steel coils feature specialized zinc coating masses ranging from Z120 to Z275 (and customized up to Z600 for marine structures). This ensures galvanic and barrier protection that prevents premature red rust formation, guaranteeing structural life expectancies exceeding 20 years in highly corrosive environments.

Infrastructure Development & Civil Engineering Integration

Vietnam’s massive infrastructure push—including urban rail systems, highway networks, airport expansions like the Long Thanh International Airport, and extensive renewable energy farms—demands steel structures with predictable mechanical properties.

By offering structural grade GI coils complying with ASTM A653 SS Grade 33 to Grade 80, we provide developers and EPC contractors in Vietnam with the high yield strength and elongation profiles required for safety-critical seismic and wind-load applications.

Coating Selection Matrix for Vietnam’s Industrial Zones

Choosing the right coating chemical composition is vital to balance cost and structural longevity. Review the structural and environment compatibility matrix designed by our metallurgical team below:

Coating Type Composition Corrosion Resistance Ideal Vietnam Applications Salt Spray Life (Hours)
GI (Galvanized Iron) 99% Pure Zinc (Zn) Excellent Galvanic & Barrier HVAC Ducting, Scaffolding, C-Channels, Cable Trays 240 - 480 (Depends on coating mass)
GL (Galvalume) 55% Al, 43.4% Zn, 1.6% Si Superior Heat & Flat Corrosion Industrial Roofing & Siding (Dry/Acidic Zones) 600 - 1000
ZAM (Zinc-Al-Mg) Zinc + Aluminum + Magnesium Self-healing cut edges, outstanding alkaline resistance Coastal Solar PV Racking, Marine Infrastructure, Agriculture 1500+ (Ultra-durability)

Global Trade Synergies & Logistics Routing to Vietnam

The key to a successful steel supply chain in Vietnam relies heavily on strategic freight logistics. Located in the Tangshan-Tianjin heavy industry cluster, our plant is uniquely positioned 150 km from the Port of Tianjin. This allows us to rapidly move material from our production lines to cargo vessels, minimizing port staging times and shipping delays.

  • ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) Compliance: We issue complete Certificate of Origin Form E documents, helping Vietnamese importers qualify for preferential 0% tariff rates on qualifying carbon steel products.
  • Direct Marine Shipping Lanes: Standard ocean voyages from Tianjin/Bohai Gulf to major Vietnamese ports like Haiphong (North) and Ho Chi Minh City/Cat Lai (South) typically take 8 to 12 days, ensuring fast project turnaround times.
  • Seaworthy Packing Systems: All coil shipments are packed with anti-rust VCI paper, protective metal sleeves, inner and outer corner rings, and radial steel strapping to prevent damage from salt air and maritime environments.

Technical Roadmap & Decarbonization for Vietnam's Green Growth

As Vietnam targets Net-Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050 under its national green development strategy, industrial procurement must align with environmentally responsible production processes. Hansheng Technology is actively investing in cleaner metallurgy and eco-friendly coating technologies:

Cr-Free (Trivalent Chrome & Organic) Passivation

To support environmental sustainability, we offer trivalent chrome and completely chrome-free chemical passivation. This helps clients comply with international RoHS and REACH standards.

Substrate Down-Gauging & High Yield Grades

By using structural steel grades with high yield strengths (up to 550 MPa), structural engineers can reduce total steel thickness without sacrificing safety, saving energy and materials.

Continuous Galvanizing Line (CGL) Optimization

Our continuous heat treatment furnace configuration uses high-precision air knives to achieve uniform coating thicknesses across the entire width of the coil, reducing waste and raw material use.

Technical Q&A: Key Questions from Steel Engineers

What is the standard lead time for shipping GI Coils from your Tangshan facility to Haiphong Port?

Our typical production lead time is 20 to 30 days after order confirmation. Transit time from Tangshan to the Port of Tianjin is 1-2 days, followed by an ocean freight voyage to Haiphong Port of approximately 8 to 12 days. In total, clients can expect delivery within 35 to 45 days.

Can you provide Form E certificates to avoid import duties under the ACFTA?

Yes, we provide the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area Certificate of Origin (Form E). This allows qualified importers in Vietnam to enjoy preferential zero tariff rates (0%) on imported galvanized steel coils and section structural steels.

How do you prevent white rust damage during ocean transport in humid conditions?

We apply a chemical passivation layer (chromated or chrome-free) and a thin layer of protective oil to the coil surface. We also wrap each coil in high-strength volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCI) paper and seal it inside a heavy-duty steel sleeve. This setup prevents moisture from touching the zinc coating during maritime transit.

Which standards are your galvanized steels manufactured to?

Our GI products are manufactured to all major international standards, including JIS G3302 (SGCC, SGCD, SGC340/400/440/570), ASTM A653/A653M (CS Type A/B/C, SS Grade 33/40/50/80), EN 10346 (DX51D+Z, DX52D+Z, S250GD to S550GD), and GB/T 2518. We provide Mill Test Certificates (MTC) with chemical analysis and mechanical testing reports for every batch.
