Metallurgical Properties of SAE 1008 Low-Carbon Steel

SAE 1008 is a widely specified low-carbon steel alloy within the standard carbon steel family. It is characterized by high ductility, weldability, and moderate strength, making it the preferred raw material for cold-drawing factories, mesh manufacturers, and automotive fastener lines globally. The strict limitation on carbon elements (maximum 0.10%) provides superb mechanical workability without risk of cracking during severe reduction draws.

Information Gain Insight: Our metallurgical team closely monitors raw billet chemistry at early smelting phases, ensuring the inclusion rating is minimized. This level of purity translates into higher fatigue limits and fewer breakages on modern multi-stage high-speed drawing machines.

Mechanical Strength Profiles

In raw wire rod format (typically hot-rolled and cooled under controlled conditions), SAE 1008 exhibits characteristics optimized for heavy deformation. It has a typical tensile strength range of 340 to 420 MPa, a yield strength of 240 to 310 MPa, and elongation indexes exceeding 30%. These properties are finely tuned by regulating our Stelmor conveyor cooling speed after the rolling block, ensuring a high-quality ferrite-pearlite matrix with zero hard martensite phases.

Hansheng Technology: Advanced Production Infrastructure

Established in 2006 in Tangshan City, Hebei Province—the global hub for steel production—Hansheng Technology (Hebei) Co., Ltd. operates 8 high-performance production lines. Our geographical position places us only 150 kilometers from Tianjin seaport, enabling seamless shipping of large bulk containers. We operate with an annual production capability reaching 650,000 tons of high-grade steel products, exporting to regions in Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.

High-Volume Production

With multiple active lines operating round-the-clock, we fulfill high-tonnage contract obligations punctually, keeping supply lines moving for international infrastructure projects.

Controlled Decarburization

Through nitrogen-atmosphere furnace controls, we restrict surface decarburization to below 1.0% of the rod diameter, preserving surface hardness and wire drawing consistency.

Advanced Descaling

Our wire rods undergo highly efficient mechanical descaling or chemical acid pickling, presenting a clean profile that extends drawing die longevity.

Hansheng Technology Factory Facilities

Global Procurement, Tariff Protection & Supply Logistics

Purchasing industrial wire rods in bulk requires careful logistics and financial planning. At Hansheng, we help clients manage transit routes, international import tariffs, and material storage conditions. Our location near Bohai Bay provides a shipping hub that reduces inland cargo handling costs and ensures that containers are transferred securely to global container ships at Tianjin Port.

Anti-Rust Coating Protocol: Because low-carbon steel is susceptible to maritime humidity, each batch of wire rod coils is wrapped in moisture-resistant polymers or treated with non-residual oil coatings. This ensures materials arrive dry and clean.

Technical Whitepaper: SAE 1008 Processing & Cold-Drawing Optimization

1. Microstructure Controls: Ferrite Matrix Optimization

The drawability of SAE 1008 wire rods depends on their microstructure. Our thermal profile controls are designed to achieve a clean polygonal ferrite grain distribution with finely dispersed pearlite. By maintaining high coiling temperatures (typically 830°C to 880°C) followed by moderate cooling rates on the Stelmor deck, we limit grain growth and prevent martensitic transformations. This structure minimizes processing resistance, reducing draw fractures and extend die life during cold-drawing.

2. Mechanical Descaling vs. Chemical Acid Pickling

Preparing low-carbon steel rods for drawing requires removing hot-rolled oxide scale. Mechanical descaling uses reverse bending and wire brushing, making it an eco-friendly option with lower processing costs. Chemical pickling uses hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, providing a clean surface that supports high-quality phosphate and lubricant carrier adhesion. We offer both finishing configurations to match our customers' drawing preparation preferences.

3. Silicon and Manganese Balancing for High-Speed Drawing

Silicon (Si) and Manganese (Mn) concentrations affect the work-hardening rate of SAE 1008. While manganese improves strength, levels above 0.50% can lead to rapid work-hardening during consecutive multi-die reductions. Similarly, silicon levels must be balanced: low silicon reduces drawing resistance, while moderate silicon improves coating response during hot-dip galvanizing. Our metallurgical process controls these elements to optimize the material for drawing and downstream plating operations.

4. Preventing Aging Embrittlement

Free nitrogen atoms in low-carbon steel can cause aging embrittlement, which reduces ductility over storage time. To prevent this, our steelmaking process limits nitrogen levels. We also use small additions of aluminum to bind remaining nitrogen into stable aluminum nitrides, helping to maintain drawing performance and ductility during extended shipping and storage periods.

Technical & Sourcing FAQ: Wholesale SAE 1008 Wire Rods

Get answers to technical and procurement questions from our metallurgy and logistics teams.

What is the difference between SAE 1006 and SAE 1008 wire rods? +
The main difference lies in carbon content. SAE 1006 specifies a maximum carbon limit of 0.08%, while SAE 1008 allows up to 0.10% carbon. Consequently, SAE 1006 is slightly softer and more ductile, making it suitable for ultra-fine wire drawing. SAE 1008 provides marginally higher tensile strength, which is preferred for construction mesh, standard fasteners, and utility hangers.
What coil weight and dimensional packaging configurations do you offer? +
Our standard export coils weigh between 1.8 and 2.5 metric tons. They are strapped with high-tensile steel bands at four points. We offer coil IDs of approximately 850mm and ODs of up to 1,250mm, compatible with standard payoff reels and automatic drawing machinery.
How does Tangshan's location impact global procurement logistics? +
Tangshan is the center of steel manufacturing in China. Located 150 km from Tianjin seaport, it offers lower inland transport costs and direct access to major ocean freight lanes. This proximity helps reduce total lead times and handling risks compared to inland steel factories.
How do you prevent surface oxidation during long ocean voyages? +
We apply light rust-preventative oil coatings and use protective plastic wrapping. For humid or long-distance shipping routes, we offer container desiccant packs and specialized sea-freight packaging to ensure the material arrives ready for drawing.
Do your wire rods comply with ASTM A510 and other global testing standards? +
Yes. All our materials are produced and certified to ASTM A510M, JIS G3505, DIN 17140, and GB/T 701. We provide standard Mill Test Certificates (EN 10204 3.1) showing chemical analysis, heat numbers, and mechanical properties for every batch shipped.
What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ) for international orders? +
Our standard MOQ is 25 metric tons, corresponding to one 20-foot shipping container. We also arrange break-bulk shipments for larger, multi-thousand-ton contract orders.
Do you support third-party pre-shipment inspections? +
Yes. We support pre-shipment inspections by independent agencies such as SGS, BV, or TUV. Inspectors can verify weight, dimensions, packaging, and collect samples for testing prior to vessel loading.
