A comprehensive analysis of metallurgy, structural evolution, and corrosion mitigation mechanisms of Zinc-Aluminum-Magnesium coated steel strip coils.
Traditional hot-dip galvanizing (GI) coatings, while effective, struggle with cut-edge degradation, scratching, and highly alkaline or ammonia-heavy atmospheres. Custom Zinc-Aluminum-Magnesium (ZAM) steel strip coils represent a major evolutionary leap in continuous galvanizing technology. The metallurgical makeup typically consists of a zinc base alloyed with 1.5% to 3.5% Magnesium and 5% to 11% Aluminum.
This precise molecular configuration triggers a unique phase separation during cooling, resulting in a microstructure containing a ternary eutectic phase. When exposed to corrosive chloride-rich or agricultural environments, the presence of Magnesium reacts with moisture to form Simonkolleite [Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O], an exceptionally stable, dense chemical compound that deposits on the damaged or cut areas. This provides a self-healing barrier that completely outperforms standard zinc coatings.
| Coating Category | Chemical Composition | Standard Coating Weight (g/m²) | Cut-Edge Protection | Standard Salt Spray Resistance (Hours) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ZAM (Zinc-Aluminum-Magnesium) | Zn + 1.5%-3% Mg + 5%-11% Al | ZMA90 - ZMA275 | Excellent (Chemical Self-Healing) | 3,000+ Hours |
| Galfan (ZA) | Zn + 5% Al + Mischmetal | Z300 - Z450 | Moderate | 1,200 - 1,500 Hours |
| Hot-Dip Galvanized (GI) | 99%+ Pure Zinc | Z120 - Z600 | Sacrificial (Fast Degredation) | 300 - 500 Hours |
| Aluzinc / Galvalume (GL) | 55% Al + 43.4% Zn + 1.6% Si | AZ150 | Poor (Edge Rusting Occurs) | 1,500 - 2,000 Hours |
One of the primary failure points in structural steel assemblies is the cut edge. In traditional GI strips, the steel substrate is immediately exposed at sheared edges, leading to galvanic corrosion that creeps underneath the coating layer. With custom ZAM steel strip coils, the mechanism changes completely. As the material is cut, exposed to moisture and oxygen, the magnesium and aluminum ions slowly dissolve from the surrounding coating layer, migrating to the exposed carbon steel core.
This chemical reaction precipitates a hard, glassy, and highly dense protective film. This film prevents further oxidation and effectively seals the edge, eliminating the need for post-processing treatments, cold-galvanizing sprays, or expensive anti-rust edge coatings. Consequently, manufacturers can significantly streamline production processes while lowering the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the finished components.
Where high durability meets modern infrastructure. Exploring the structural replacement of hot-dip galvanized and stainless steel systems.
Solar power plants in coastal regions, deserts, and aggressive terrains demand a 25-to-30-year operational life without structural maintenance. ZAM steel strip coils are increasingly replacing heavy structural steel sections due to their lighter weight, high yield strength, and superior resistance to micro-climate corrosion caused by wind, sand, and high humidity.
Modern confinement agricultural facilities are highly corrosive environments due to high concentrations of ammonia (NH3) from livestock manure, coupled with high temperature and humidity. Traditional galvanization degrades within a few years. ZAM steel demonstrates exceptional chemical resistance, maintaining structural integrity up to four times longer than GI.
With the automotive industry shifting toward lightweighting and durability, custom-slit ZAM strips are critical for stamping interior brackets, window frames, door rails, and chassis undercarriage guards. Excellent formability combined with self-healing properties means minimal peeling during stamping and pressing.
At Hansheng Technology, our technical roadmap is focused on developing green, high-strength coated steel solutions. By optimizing the alloy ratio of Magnesium and Aluminum, we are continuously refining coating adhesion, enabling thinner coating layers to achieve performance levels that previously required heavy, resource-intensive coatings.
Our commitment to sustainability driving our R&D forward. We are progressively phasing out hexavalent chromium passivation treatments in favor of environmentally sound, REACH-compliant organic-inorganic hybrid coatings. This ensures that every ZAM strip coil delivered to our clients meets international eco-labeling standards while maintaining elite mechanical protection.
Our ISO9001:2000 and ISO14001 certified facilities enforce a multi-point quality assurance protocol. From raw hot-rolled substrate selection to final strip tension leveling, each batch undergoes strict mechanical testing, including tension trials, coating adhesion bend tests, and cyclical salt spray tests. This guarantees consistent yield strength and uniform coating distribution.
Strict selection of cold-rolled full-hard steel, followed by advanced surface cleaning to ensure trace oxides are removed prior to annealing.
Precise continuous temperature management (450°C - 480°C) of the ternary Zn-Al-Mg bath, maintaining target alloy composition tolerances within 0.1%.
Application of chromium-free treatment films to comply with international RoHS and REACH environmental regulations while preventing storage stain.
